Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
PPE puts a barrier between the worker and the hazard that is designed to prevent injury or illness from a specific hazard.

Points to remember about PPE
l PPE is not a substitute for safe ways of working
l Employers have a responsibility to ensure appropriate, well-fitting, PPE is readily available.
l Aprons and gloves should be stored in a clean and dry area to prevent surface Contamination.
l Every PPE which is to be reused and can transmit diseases should be decontaminated after use.
l Any reusable PPE should have a clearly documented cleaning/laundering schedule.
l PPE should not be a source of further contamination by, for example, being left on environmental surfaces after being removed or by removing inappropriately and contaminating hands.

Problems related to using PPE
l Compatibility issues related to using PPE
l Inconvenient and uncomfortable to use PPE.
l Ear protectors or Ear Muffs can prevent hearing warning alarm signals.
l Respirators can make it harder to breathe
l They may cause infections.
l Leaky gloves can trap hazardous chemicals against the skin.

How do you know what type of PPE to use?
The type of PPE you need to use depends:
l Nature of hazard
l How exposure can affect our body e.g routes of entry into your body.
l How long you will be exposed? For example in the dust, the respirator filter should be appropriate to the dust whereas the vapours dust respirator will not function in fumes or vapours.

What do you mean by PPE and its Barriers and uses? |
Using PPE
l Workers should be trained and properly use and maintenance of PPE
l Fit the user with PPE and gives instructions on its care and use.
l Read all the warning labels and limitations of PPE
l All the PPE should be checked for leaks before use.

Classification of PPE
l Head protection
l Face Shield
l Body Protection
l Safety Shoes
l Safety Glasses
l Safety Goggles
l Safety Gloves
l Respirator protection
l Hearing Protection
l Dust Mask
Safety Hat or/ Helmet
l Head protection is provided by headwear called a Safety Helmet or hard hat parts of Helmet
l Shell: made of metallic, plastic or fiberglass protects the head against impacts or electric shocks all around

Six-point Suspension Cotton nylon or plastic:
l Holds the shell away from the head
l Acts as a shock absorber
l Allow air to flow freely
Safe use and care of Helmets
l Discard a shell that shows wear cracks and is dull in colour (strength reduction)
l Replace a suspension that appears and damaged or worn out.
l Do not draw the chin strap over the brim of the helmet.

Face Shield
l It protects the face from sparks spatters (pieces of molten metal), dust, and splashes sprays of hazardous liquids.
l Wear safety glasses or Goggles underneath, if needed.

Body Protection
l Types of body protection may include aprons, jacket coveralls, and fireproof suits etc.
l It provides a space between the body, materials, and tools saving the worker from harm.
l Choose body protection apparel according to the hazard of work.
l Visitors must also be made to wear body protection apparel.
l These apparel should be made of tough cloth to resist cuts and abrasion and must be either fire resistant or fireproof depending upon the nature of the hazard

Safety Shoes
Steel-toe boots (known as safety shoes ) have a protective reinforcement in the toe, and a sole plate, which protects the foot from falling objects and punctures from below and from electric shocks.

Safety Glasses
l Safety glasses are perhaps the most widely used type of eye protection.
l They may look similar to regular glasses but are much stronger and more resistant to impact and heat.

What do you mean by PPE and its Barriers and uses? |
Goggles
Goggles surrounding the eye area, give more protection against splashing liquids, fumes vaporous, powders, dust, and mists.

Gloves
Various types provide protection to hands but never used those gloves which hinder the free movement of the user because it may cause an accident.
l Natural Rubber
l Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVC)
l Nit-rile
l Neoprene
l Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC)
l Cotton
l Wire mesh
l Kevlar
l Welding
l Leather
l Anti-vibration

Respiratory Protection
Many airborne substances which are health hazards when inhaled cause serious diseases. This includes breathing in dust caused by grinding and sanding, welding fumes, paint mist, and chemicals vapour s from the solvents and various gases.

Safe use of Respirators
l Select one suited to the type of dust/contaminant and workplace.
l Check the manufacturer's instructions before using the respirators
l Carry out the positive pressure test as under :
l Cover the respirators exhalation with your hand, then breathe out slowly
l The face will bulge out slowly
l Hold our breath for about 10 seconds. if no air leaks from around the face piece, the fit is good. In case of leakage, readjust/replace the respirator
l The respirator is not working when you can smell or taste the contaminant, breathing becomes difficult or you become dizzy
l Inspect and clean your respirator after use
l To store, wrap in a seal-able plastic bag and put it in a dry place away from sun.
Self Contaminated Breathing Apparatus (SCBA)
A self-contaminated breathing apparatus, or SCBA, sometimes referred to as compressed apparatus simply breathing (BA), is a device workers, fire- others to provide in an dangerous to life atmosphere (CABA), or apparatus worn by rescue fighters, and breathable air “immediately or Health “ IDLH”
