Fire Triangle
The basic principle of fire and Combustion can be represented by fire triangle. These three elements must be present the for existing the fire, if one of this not present then fire cannot exist.

- Air / Oxygen - Which it breathes.
- Fuel - Which it eats.
- Heat -Well it’s a fire after all.
To put out a fire we need to:
Smother it (Stops it breathing)
Remove the fuel (Stops it from eating, starves it)
Reduce the heat (Cools the fire)
Fire can be extinguished by:
l Starvation
l Smothering
l Cooling

Classification of fires According to British Standard
Class A - Solid combustible Non-metals that leave an ash
E.g. wood, paper, cloth, trash, plastic.
Class B - Flammable liquids that boil or bubble
E.g Gasoline, oil, grease, acetone
Class C - Flammable gasses e.g, methane, propane, LPG
Class D - Combustible Metals: potassium, sodium, aluminium, magnesium.
Class K - Kitchen fire, Cooking oil or fat

Fire Risk Assessment
The main three reasons for assessing and managing fire risks are to:
Prevent harm to the people - All employers have a moral duty to take appropriate steps to ensure the health & safety and can be penalized if they fail to meet those obligations.
Comply with the Law- Employers have legal obligations regarding fire safety and can be penalized if they fail to meet those legal obligations.
Minimize the cost of Fire in the workplace - most business that suffer a major fire do not fully recover from its effects. If a factory or a office burns down it may never be rebuilt, costing not only the business but also jobs of the workers based there.
