A Permit to work (PTW) is a written record that authorizes specific work, at a specific work location, for a specific time period.it ensures that all the hazards and precautions have been considered before work begins. Or a formal, documented safety procedure, forming part of a safe system of work.

Consideration when using a permit to work
l A PTW should only be issued by a competent person who is completely familiar with the work or situation covered by the permit e.g lead operator or supervisor.
l A PTW shall be issued with a work method statement stating how the job is to be done.
l The permit issuer should be review the work with the permit receiver before begins.
l Practical training exercises for issuing PTW should be considered.
l The person receiving the permit must completely understand the work situations, the potential hazards, and the precautions required before accepting.

The permit review issuer has the authority to issue the permit for a specific job in a specific area. The permit issuer may be from the client or contractor.
Responsibilities of PTW Issuer
l Reviewing, endorsing, and issuing PTW.
l Visiting the site to evaluate hazards to suggest safeguards.
l Completing the relevant sections of PTW.
l Ensuring the participants in the PTW carefully plan and conduct work in accordance with PTW ( if required )

l Initiating and completing all applicable sections of PTW.
l Supervising the work prescribed in the PTW to ensure that is conducted in the most efficient and safe manner.
l Notifying the issuer of work progress and completion, and ensuring and site is returned to a safe and operational state.
l Taking adequate care to preserve the permit in good condition.
l Providing / arranging all necessary resources to perform the work.
l Managing re-validation of PTW (If required)
